FRUITS, BERRIES & VEGETABLES

 

This is just the start of our fruits and vegetables for 2010. When we open in May we'll have an even larger selection of veggies in 6-packs and larger pots, too. We will offer asparagus again this year. We are adding apricots to the fruit tree section. It's a very edible year!

 

Arugula ARUGULA (ROCKET)

Spicy, tender leaf that is delicious in salads. Heirloom. Annual.

 

NEW! Cucumber 'Homemade Pickles' CUCUMBER

Solid and crisp inside these cukes were developed for the home canner. They taste good in salads, too. These tough and vigorous plants have good disease resistance. Pickle them at the 1" to 5" length. 55 days to maturity.

 

NEW! Fragaria 'Fort Laramie' FORT LARAMIE STRAWBERRY

Ft. Laramie produces large berries and the plants are extremely hardy. This is a strawberry that will winter over, even if the temps drop down to MINUS 30 F. Good flavor and vigorous production also make these a good choice for everyone in Colorado.

 

Fragaria 'Fragissimo' STRAWBERRY

Pretty pink blooms; everbearing; large red fruit. Great for containers. Zone 4.

 

Fragaria 'Tri-star' STAWBERRY, TRI-STAR

Medium sized, delicious, firm glossy red berries on this day-neutral everberarer that produces about every six weeks from early spring through fall. Self-pollinating and disease resistant. Hardy to zone 3.

 

Malus 'Haralred' APPLE, HARALRED

This late-blooming dwarf apple tree produces medium size crisp, tart, and juicy fruit good for eating, cooking, and storing. Fire blight resistant. 12'-15' tall. Hardy to zone 3.

 

Malus 'Honeycrisp' APPLE, HONEYCRISP

Wow. Best apple ever! Crisp, juicy, sweet, and it keeps in storage up to 5 months! Fruit is mottled red over yellow. Ripens late September-Early October. 12'-15 tall. Zone 3.

 

Malus 'Liberty' APPLE, LIBERTY

Blooms mid to late season. Medium sized red fruit is ripe in early October. Crisp and juicy, this disease resistant apple wins in taste contests against Red Delicious and MacIntosh. Good for fresh eating, cooking and canning. Long storage life. Semi-dwarf 12'-15' tall. Zone 4.

 

NEW! Malus 'SnowSweet' APPLE, SNOWSWEET

Bred by the same Minnesota folks who brought us Honeycrisp, this is a great tasting apple with crisp, white flesh that stays white long after cutting. Excellent for fresh eating as well as pies and sauce. Ripens mid-September. Above average resistance to fireblight. All-in-all a great apple for Colorado. Zone 4.

 

Malus 'Sweet Sixteen' APPLE, SWEET SIXTEEN

A very cold hardy variety developed by the University of Minnesota. Dark red apples are crisp and very sweet. Excellent for eating, pies and stores great. Fruit ripens in September. 12'-15' tall. Zone 3.

 

Prunus americana WILD PLUM

This Colorado native will eventually spread into a thicket, making a great habitat for wildlife. It has fragrant, white flowers in May and ripe fruit in July or August. Our tastiest native fruit, the plums are good for preserves and for wildlife. The leaves turn yellow to red in the fall. Hardy to 8500'. 3'-10' tall. Xeric. Zone 4.

 

NEW! Prunus 'Moorpark' APRICOT, MOORPARK

Delicious apricots are easy to grow and self-fertile. Some years they bloom too early and have their blossoms ruined by a late frost, but the trees themselves are very cold hardy. 12' tall. Zone 4.

 

Prunus persica 'Saturn' PEACH, FLAT TOP

This white-fleshed peach, a descendent of the peento (originally pan tao) from China, is much sweeter than yellow peaches and is fast becoming the favorite peach of all time. Clingfree. 10' - 15'. Zone 5.

 

NEW! Prunus 'Pioneer' APRICOT, CHINESE

A later blooming apricot; a good choice to avoid late spring frost. Golden yellow fruits; sweet, firm and juicy. Self-fertile. 10'-15' tall. Zone 4.

 

Prunus 'Stella' CHERRY, STELLA

Sweet dark red to black fruit good to eat fresh or make jams and preserves. Blooms early; harvest June-July. A good pollinator that grows vigorously and upright. 20'-25' tall. Hardy to zone 5.

Tomato 'Black Krim' TOMATO, BLACK KRIM

This medium-large sized, reddish-purplish-black tomato with green shoulders is one of the best tasting (and funniest looking) tomatoes ever! Heirloom. 75-80 days. Indeterminate.

 

Tomato 'Black Prince' TOMATO, BLACK PRINCE

A a medium sized tomato, it matures earlier than Black Krim, making it better for high altitude gardens. Black Prince also has great flavor. 70 days. Indeterminate.

One of the best tasting heirloom tomatoes, this variety does well in Pueblo and all of the Lower Arkansas Valley. Brought from Tennessee by the Cherokee tribe along the Trail of Tears. Very productive plants produce lots of dusky rose to purple colored, 12 oz.-1 lb., beefsteak tomatoes with deep red colors to the interior flesh and dark

Tomato 'Early Goliath' TOMATO

One of the earliest slicing tomatoes, producing 8 oz. tomatoes great for sandwiches and salads. Similar to Early Girl, but larger and very disease resistant. Indeterminate. 58 days to maturity.

Recommended to us by a customer who said it did well in her garden near Hatchet Ranch. Mild and sweet; low-acid. Heavy yields of 1/2 lb beefsteak tomatoes; disease resistant. 72 days to maturity.

Heavy producer of red with yellow stripes. 2" size. Indeterminate. 56 days.

 

Tomato 'Oregon Spring' TOMATO, OREGON SPRING

This early tomato is a cross between a Russian heirloom and a beefsteak called Starshot. It's determinate, and a heavy producer. I didn't think I liked this tomato, until I discovered it makes excellent tomato sauce. For fresh eating it's not the premier tomato, but for cooking or canning, this is your girl. Practically seedless, another plus. 60 days to maturity.

 

Tomato 'Stupice' TOMATO, STUPICE

Produces 2 to 4 oz. round tomatoes. Wins many taste tests every year, is often the first to produce in the garden. This is an heirloom variety from Czechoslovakia. Indeterminate. 52 days.

 

Tomato 'Suncherry' RED CHERRY

Red cherry tomato with sweet, real tomato taste. Indeterminate. 58 days.

 

Tomato 'Sungold' TOMATO, SUNGOLD

'Sungold' produces 1/2 oz. tomatoes on long trusses. If I could grow only one tomato it would be 'Sungold'. It's sweet and fruity and early--it's easy to pop in your mouth while you're gardening. It's the best cherry tomato without question, but I think it is the best of any type of tomato, too. 57 days. Indeterminate.

 

Tomato 'Sweet Million' TOMATO, SWEET MILLION

An improved version of Sweet 100, this variety offers the same wonderful flavor and yields, but much better disease resistance and tolerance to cracking. Incredibly long clusters of 1 inch dark red fruit grow on tall, vigorous plants. Indeterminate. 65 days.

 

Tomato 'Taxi' TOMATO, TAXI

Best yellow tomato for Colorado. Good to grow in a container. Each fruit is 4-6 ounces. Heirloom. Determinate.

Vitis 'Reliance' GRAPE, RED SEEDLESS

A very hardy red seedless grape from Canada! The grapes are small but flavorful, and will keep a month or more in the refrigerator.They taste so good just off the vine, none have ever made it into grape jelly here. Zone 5.
