A seed grown mix, replacing 'Summer Pastels.' The colors are vibrant pinks, reds, and yellows, the plants grow

more upright, and the entire group is nice for the border or cut flowers. 2' tall. Zone 4.

Achillea X 'Terra Cotta' TERRA COTTA YARROW

Shades of peach, rusty red, orange and yellow. Another great cross between A.taygetea and A. millefolium.

These hybrids are less likely to seed around and much longer blooming than the straight species. Zone 4.

 

 

Actaea simplex 'Atropurpurea' (syn. Cimicifuga)

Creamy white flowers in summer hightlight the purple leaves. Prefers compost-enriched, moist soil and part

shade. 4' tall. Zone 3.

 

 

Aegopodium podagraria BISHOP'S WEED

A vigorous groundcover with variegated leaves and white flowers that look like a dwarf Queen Anne's Lace.

Useful in shade or part sun. 10" tall. Zone 4.

 

 

Agastache aurantiaca

Yellow-gold flowers look great mixed in with all of the other agastaches, and this one is attractive to

hummingbirds, too. Long blooming and compact. 18" tall. Zone 5.

Smoky violet blue flowers from July to frost. 2'-3' tall. Zone 5? 6?

 

 

Agastache cana Sonoran Sunset

A compact agastache with deep rose colored flowers. 18" tall. Full sun. Drought tolerant. Zone 5.

 

 

Agastache rupestris SUNSET HYSSOP

Peach-colored flowers with lavender calyx. The foliage smells like licorice and root beer. 1997 Plant Select.

Agastache 'Summer Heir'

This child of Agastache 'Summer Breeze' is a fine addition to our agastache collection. The foliage is fragrant,

with a hint of lemon, and the flowers are large and colorful, ranging from peachy pink to lavender pink. 3' tall.

Agastache x 'Daughter of Rye Pink'

Seed from a cross of Agastache cana and Agastache rupestris. These have some variation in color and form,

but all are great for attracting hummingbirds to the late summer garden. 30" tall. Zone 5.

 

 

Agastache x 'Rye Pink' RYE PINK HYSSOP

A very showy cross between Agastache cana and Agastache rupestris. Every flower exhibits shades of pink,

peach, and purple. Hardy. Zone 5--hardy in Monument.

Ajuga reptans 'Black Scallop' BUGLEWEED

Incredibly dark shiny leaves. Good accent for a container or as a groundcover. Purple flowers in spring. 6" tall.

Ajuga reptans 'Bronze Beauty' BRONZE BUGLEWEED

Along with periwinkle, this is one of the traditional groundcovers for a shady area. Not a good choice for under

pine trees--for this we recommend Galium odoratum (SWEET WOODRUFF)--but it will flourish in quite a bit of

shade. Zone 3.

 

 

Ajuga reptans 'Burgundy Glow' BURGUNDY BUGLEWEED

Showy sport of bugleweed with variegated green, white, and burgundy leaves. Blue flowers in late spring. 8"

Alcea ficifolia 'Country Romance Mix' HOLLYHOCK

This is an old-fashioned mix of single flowers in shades of red, yellow, maroon, pink, and peach. Drought

tolerant and heat tolerant. Zone 4.

 

 

Alcea rosea 'Double Apricot' HOLLYHOCK

Gorgeous double blooms in mid-summer. 5' tall. Zone 4.

 

 

Alcea rosea 'Peaches & Dreams' HOLLYHOCK

Double pastel, peach-colored blooms; looks fantastic against a wall or fence. Zone 4.

 

 

Alcea rugosa HOLLYHOCK

A pretty, pale yellow perennial that flowers from mid-June until the end of August. Seems immune to the

diseases that disfigure the foliage of the common hollyhocks. One plant can be a traffic stopper. 6' x 3'. Zone 3.

 

 

Alchemilla mollis LADY'S MANTLE

Graceful and delicate in appearance, yet tough and cold hardy in the garden. Wonderful for part shade. The

foliage is velvety and fan-shaped-water drops caught in the pleated leaves glisten in the sunlight. Lime-green

and yellow clustered flooms. Great accent for fresh and dried flower bouguets. 15"-18" tall. Zone 4.

 

 

Alyssum markgraffii

Gray-green leaves and clusters of small gold flowers. Unlike most of the "baskets of gold" the leaves stay nice

all season and flowers repeat through late summer. Zone 5.

 

 

Alyssum wulfenianum

Another great alyssum for the rock garden or xeriscape. Blooms June-July. 8" tall. Zone 4.

 

 

Amsonia jonesii BLUE STAR

This native is beautiful in spring with masses of blue flowers on willowy stems. Very drought tolerant, it's deer

and rabbit resistant, too. 12" x 15". Zone 4.

 

 

Anacyclus depressus GNOME'S HAT

Rock garden daisy that grows only an inch or two high. Gray-green leaves are ferny. The flowers are white on

top, with red undersides that show when the petals fold up at night or on a cloudy day. Very adaptable to clay

soils, it has even seeded into the road base in the driveway! Irrigation requirements are unknown, but perhaps

more than I suspected. Zone 4.

 

 

Anemone biarmiensis

Soft cream-colored flowers in bloom in May and again in September. Good for the sunny rock garden. 10" tall.

Anemone hybrida 'Pamina' WINDFLOWER

Rosy-red semi-double flowers in late summer. 30" tall. For rich moist soil in partial shade. Zone 4.

 

 

Anemone sylvestris SNOWDROP ANEMONE

An early blooming dwarf anemone with rough textured, but finely cut foliage. Large fragrant snow white

flowers. Sun or part shade. 12"tall. In 2007 it bloomed again in September. Great plant, tougher than it looks.

Anemone tomentosa 'Robustissima' WINDFLOWER

The earliest to bloom of the fall flowering anemones, and also the hardiest and most vigorous. More tolerant of

sun and drought than other fall blooming anemones. 2'- 3' tall. Zone 4.

 

 

Antennaria dioica 'Rubra' PUSSYTOES

Silver foliage topped with wine-red flowers in spring. For sun to part shade. Drought tolerant. 4" tall. Zone 3.

 

 

Antirrhinum braun-blanquetii SNAPDRAGON

A perennial snapdragon with creamy yellow or bicolor yellow and rose flowers. 2' tall. Zone 5.

 

 

Aquilegia chrysantha 'Yellow Queen' COLUMBINE

A native to canyons and mountains of the Southwest, this columbine is taller than most and the big yellow

flowers are strikingly beautiful. 3' tall. Zone 5.

 

 

Aquilegia 'Colorado Violet and White' COLUMBINE, COLORADO VIOLET & WHITE

These columbine flowers are upward-facing. Large blooms on 2' tall stems, they're as graceful as a swan. Zone 3.

 

 

Aquilegia hybrida 'McKana's Giants' COLUMBINE, MCKANA'S GIANTS

Big flowers on tall plants make a huge show in the late spring. Good color mix. 30" tall. Zone 3.

 

 

Aquilegia hybrida 'Music Blue and White' MUSIC BLUE COLUMBINE

A short,compact version of the traditional columbine hybrid, but the blooms are just as big and the color is

excellent. 18" tall.

 

 

Aquilegia skinnerii 'Tequila Sunrise' (A. formosa) COLUMBINE

The orange-red spurs and yellow blades of this columbine make it a good choice for the hummingbird garden.

Robert Nold, in his book COLUMBINES, suggests that this is actually Aquilegia formosa var. formosa, a

columbine native to the western half of the U.S. 24" tall. Zone 3.

 

 

Aquilegia viridiflora 'Chocolate Soldier' CHOCOLATE SOLDIER COLUMBINE

A columbine with green sepals and brown corolla. Unusual. 12" tall. Zone 4.

Very dark purple spurs contrast vividly with the white corolla. 2' tall. One of my favorites. Zone 4.

 

 

Artemisia frigida FRINGED SAGE

Colorado native with finely feathered foliage that stays low. The flower spikes are about 12" tall.

 

 

Artemisia lactiflora WORMWOOD

Many cream-colored flower spikes in July and August. While this artemisia is not a xeriscape plant, it's very nice

for a perennial border. Soft green leaves. We love it for cut flower bouquets; it makes a great filler and

compliments almost everything. 4' tall.

 

 

Artemisia ludoviciana PRAIRIE SAGE

Pretty silver native. Xeric, good for dried flower crafts, and to make smudge sticks for incense. Zone 4.

 

 

Artemisia versicolor 'Sea Foam'

A good ground cover or accent plant for the dry garden. 10" tall.

 

 

Asclepias incarnata 'Rose Form' MILKWEED

Pink flowers June through August, this butterfly attractor is glorious in the height of summer, loving the

sunshine, happy growing where the water runs off the driveway, it is host to Monarch butterfly larva. Can take,

but does not demand, bog conditions. Deer resistant. 3' tall. Zone 3.

 

 

Asclepias tuberosa BUTTERFLY WEED

A favorite of the monarch butterfly, this bright orange flower does best in well-drained soil and full sun.

Transplant with as little root disturbance as possible. Native to Colorado. 2'.

 

 

Aster dumosus 'Sapphire' ASTER

Large lilac-blue flowers cover this low mounded aster. Starts blooming in August and continues until hard

frost. Disease resistant. Excellent paired with Aster 'Purple Dome' and long-blooming Achillea 'Moonshine'. 15"

tall. Full sun. Zone 4.

 

 

Aster novae-angliae 'Purple Dome' PURPLE DOME ASTER

This deep purple aster blooms at 18" tall and is very tidy and compact. Also disease resistent. Zone 3.

 

 

Aster novi-belgii 'Eventide' MICHAELMAS DAISY

A big, showy aster blooming in late summer. Purple flowers. 3' tall. Zone 3.

 

 

Aster oblongifolius 'Dream of Beauty'

Aster `Dream of Beauty' is the star of the late summer xeriscape. Only one foot tall, it spreads to two feet

wide, and is covered in August and September with clear pink flowers with orange centers. Zone 4.

 

 

Aster oblongifolius 'October Skies' ASTER

Blooms in September and October. This aster tolerates dry, poor soils. Blue flowers over bushy, aromatic

foliage. 18" tall. Zone 5.

 

 

Aster porteri PORTER'S ASTER

A native aster with zillions of tiny white flowers in September. Absolutely xeric. 8"-14" tall. Nice for a rock

garden.

 

 

Aster x frikartii 'Monch' ASTER, FRIKARTII

Blue flowers from July through frost. Longest blooming of the asters and helps with the transition of the

summer garden to the fall garden. We grow it near boltonia and goldenrod and physostegia. Attracts attention

from mid-summer on. Zone 5.

 

 

Asteromoea mongolica aka Kalimeris pinnatifida

Blooms from late summer into October. Small double white daisies fade to pink. No pest or disease problems,

just months of color. 2' tall.

 

 

Aurinia saxatile BASKET OF GOLD

Pretty spring blooming plant for a rock garden or planted near tulips and daffodils. Looks good trailing over

rocks or steps. The foliage is gray green, the flowers are golden yellow. Very drought tolerant.

 

 

Ballota pseudodictamnus

A great plant for a dry sunny area in the garden. Excellent plant among rocks or edging a path. The eversilver

leaves are soft and fuzzy like marrubium or Lamb's ears (Stachys lanata.) This plant is, in fact, closely related

to marrubium and stachys -- the botanical differences are minute and not easily distinguished by us

non-botanist gardeners. The foliage is the reason you want this plant the flowers are small and of little

 

 

Baptisia australis FALSE INDIGO

Blue flowers in June are replaced by black seed pods that provide interest all summer into fall. For full sun. An

easy long-lived perennial. 3' tall. Zone 3.

 

 

Baptisia 'Twilight Prairieblues' FALSE INDIGO

 

 

Baptisia x bicolor 'Starlite Prairie Blues' FALSE INDIGO

Jim Ault, Ph.D., director, Ornamental Plant Research, Chicago Botanic Garden, bred the PrairiebluesT series of

baptisia, following six years in development. "Twilite Prairieblues" is baptisia on steroids," said Ault. Blooms

from mid-May to June. After the flowers fade, the seedpods turn charcoal black, making a valued addition to

dried flower arrangements. 24" tall. Zone 4

 

 

Bergenia 'Eroica'

The green foliage traced with copper red overtones and bright red edges make this shade lover outstanding.

Rich pink flowers top red stems in April and May and the foliage turns bright red in the fall. Needs moist soil.

16" tall. Zone 3.

 

 

Bergenia purpurescens BERGENIA

Thick leathery leaves are evergreen and turn reddish purple in December. Pink blooms in early spring. Four

seasons of interest for the shade garden. 12" tall. Zone 3.

 

 

Berlanderia lyrata CHOCOLATE FLOWER

A deer-resistant native wildflower that smells like chocolate....what more could you want? It's a profuse

bloomer, with showy red-centered, yellow daisies produced all summer. The green buds, picked before the

flower blooms, make a great everlasting flower, too. 15" tall 18" wide. Very drought tolerant. This is one for

the NO-water garden. Zone 4.

 

 

Boltonia asteroides 'Snowbank' BOLTONIA

Very upright plant, never flops nor flails about, covered with numerous white daisies in late summer and fall. It

blooms a long time and looks good with asters and goldenrod. Zone 4.

 

 

Brunnera macrophylla 'Jack Frost' SIBERIAN BUGLOSS

Frosty silver leaves with dark green veins have blue forget-me-not flowers above the foliage in early spring. A

great plant for a shady spot in the garden. One of the best growers of the variegated brunnera. Won best new

perennial of the year in Holland in 2003. 12" tall. Zone 3.

 

 

Callirhoe involucrata WINE CUPS (POPPY MALLOW)

This member of the malva family is a long-blooming prairie native. The numerous burgundy red flowers are

held 2"-3" above the plant. Very drought tolerant. 1999 Plant Select. Zone 4.

 

 

Campanula persicifolia 'Telham Beauty' PEACH-LEAVED BELLFLOWER

Upright plant for the border. 2' tall with sky blue bells along the stems. Zone 3.

 

 

Campanula portenschlagiana 'Birch Hybrid' DALMATIAN BELLFLOWER

Forms a mat that will trail over walls and rocks. Covered with deep blue flowers in late spring to early summer.

One of the most popular alpine campanulas. Zone 5.

 

 

Campanula poscharskyana SERBIAN BELLFLOWER

This extremely cold hardy campanula is a great plant for a part shaded area of the garden. Lavender blue

flowers June-July; cut back after flowering. Looks great trailing over rocks. Can spread 18" wide. 10" tall.

Campanula rotundifolia BLUEBELLS OF SCOTLAND

12" tall. Blooms all summer. This is the familiar bluebell that you'll find while hiking in the Colorado mountains.

Heavy flowering and compact, these plants are so covered with blooms it's difficult to see the leaves. 4" tall.

Sun to part shade. Zone Unknown.

 

 

Castilleja integra INDIAN PAINTBRUSH

Southwestern native paints the foothills of Colorado from May to July. Difficult to transplant but worth the

effort. Flowers are bright orange. Zone 4.

 

 

Catananche caerulea alba bicolor CUPID'S DART

White semi-double star-like flowers with a blue eye, on long wiry stems held 2' above the grey green foliage.

Withstands heat and drought. Blooms in midsummer. Zone 5.

 

 

Centaurea bella

A perennial cornflower, this lavender-pink blooms are fringed and lacy over leaves that are grayish-geen.

Xeric. Limited supply.

 

 

Centranthus ruber RED VALERIAN

Many carmine-colored blooms in early summer. 2' tall. Can survive drought once established, does not like to

be overwatered, especially in clay soil. The flowers are not fragrant despite all the books, magazines, and

websites that claim they are. The ROOT is fragrant (or maybe stinky is a better word) it smells like the root of

true valerian (Valeriana officinalis). Zone 4.

 

 

Cerastium tomentosum SNOW IN SUMMER

An 8"-10" mat of silver foliage. White flowers blanket this groundcover May-June. When in bloom it's a

gorgeous thing; it then goes through a rough period and benefits from cutting back. Zone 3.

 

 

Cerastostigma plumbaginoides PLUMBAGO or LEADWORT

Brilliant blue flowers with striking red calyces in late summer. In fall the leaves turn deep red. A good

groundcover to plant with tulips or daffodils because it emerges late, as the bulb foliage dies down. 10" tall.

Chrysanthemum 'Broadway Lights' SHASTA DAISY

Bright yellow flowers gradually fade to soft pale yellow and then white as they mature. This is an unusual

shasta daisy, and very lovely. Flowers bloom from late spring into summer. 18-24" tall. Divide every 3 years.

Chrysanthemum coccineum 'Duro' PAINTED DAISY

A painted daisy with long stemmed large purple-red flowers. Gorgeous for bouquets. 30' tall. Zone 4.

 

 

Chrysanthemum maximum 'Becky' BECKY'S SHASTA DAISY

This shasta is one of the longest blooming of the cultivars. Starts in June and continues thru August. 3' tall.

 

 

Chrysanthemum maximum 'Crazy Daisy' SHASTA DAISY

The double white flowers are very showy. Some of the petals have a quilled effect, adding to the charm and

interest. Crazy Daisy makes a great a cut flower. Zone 5.

 

 

Chrysanthemum rubellum 'Clara Curtis HARDY MUM

Loooooong-blooming hardy mum, starts in July and goes until frost. Single pink flowers with yellow centers.

Hardy. 2' tall. Zone 4.

 

 

Chrysanthemum rubellum 'Mary Stoker' HARDY MUM

Begins in late August or early September with light straw-colored single daisies that age to peach and then a

darker gold. One of my favorite fall flowers. Deer resistant. Zone 4.

 

 

Chrysanthemum 'Sheffield Pink' HARDY MUM

Single, salmon-pink daisy-like flowers in September and October. Excellent cut flower. Benefits from a July 1

pinch, to encourage bushiness and avoid a floppy habit in the fall. 3' tall. Zone 5.

 

 

Chrysanthemum x superbum 'Silver Princess' DWARF SHASTA DAISY

A very floriferous compact perennial daisy. The dazzling white flowers bloom June-July. 15" tall.

 

 

Clematis heracliefolia var. davidiana CLEMATIS

This is not a vining plant, it's a bush clematis. The small, blue, fragrant, tubular flowers appear in late summer

and grow in clusters at the tips of the stems. Fluffy seedheads are pretty after the flowers fade. We grow it in

part shade and sometimes forget to water it, but it will be happy in full sun as long as it doesn't get too dry. 4'

tall. Zone 3.

 

 

Clematis integrifolia

Blue or pink bell-shaped flowers on this shrubby clematis. 3' tall. Very cold hardy. Zone 3.

 

 

Coreopsis grandiflora 'Early Sunrise' COREOPSIS

An old favorite, the sunny golden flowers appear all summer long; they look great with catmint and lavender.

Not long-lived, but will reliably reseed. 15" tall. Zone 5.

 

 

Coreopsis 'Jethro Tull' TICKSEED

Abundant, fluted, golden yellow petals, this cross between Coreopsis auriculata 'Zamphir' and Coreopsis 'Early

Sunrise' is always in bloom. You don't even need to deadhead to have flowers from June-October. 15" tall.

Coreopsis verticillata 'Creme Brulee'

This threadleaf coreopsis has larger, brighter yellow flowers than its sister Coreopsis 'Moonbeam.' It also has

flowers all along the stem to provide a bigger show in the garden. Very long blooming. 18" x 18".

 

 

Cosmos astrosanguineus CHOCOLATE COSMOS

A sweet chocolate scent makes these dark red cosmos great for containers, or plan a Chocolate Garden:

Combine with Berlanderia lyrata, our native chocolate flower, Chocolate mint, and Heliopsis 'Summer Nights'

for your own fragrant floral confection. 2' Tall. Zone 7. Grow as an annual.

 

 

Crocosmia 'Emily Mckenzie'

Soft orange flowers with deep red accents. Very showy. Probably the least hardy of the crocosmias we grow.

Protect in winter. 24" tall.

 

 

Crocosmia 'George Davidson'

Bright golden-yellow flowers and attactive lance-shaped leaves. Sun to part shade. 20" tall. Zone ? Survived

the winter of 2006-2007 in a semi-shady garden. That year we had snow cover for most of the winter, so it will

be interesting to see how it survives this year.

 

 

Crocosmia 'Lucifer'

Bright red flowers and attactive lance-shaped leaves. Sun to part shade. 3' tall. Zone 5, supposedly.

 

 

Delosperma 'Beaufort West' ICE PLANT

Originally collected from high mountains outside Beaufort West in the Karroo. Tiny leaves are covered with 1/2"

wide pink flowers. Blooms in the spring until it's too hot and then rests to bloom again in the fall. 1" x 12".

Zone 5.

 

 

Delosperma congestum 'Gold Nugget' GOLD NUGGET ICE PLANT

Yellow flowers with a white eye cover this ice plant in spring. Very cold hardy, this is one of the best ice plant

for our customers in Westcliffe and La Veta. Only half and inch tall, it will spread to 10" wide. Zone 4.

 

 

Delosperma deleeuwiae ICEPLANT

This hardy ice plant from the mountains of Lesotho at 12,000' elevation is covered with magenta blooms all

summer. 6" x 24". Zone 4.

 

 

Delosperma dyeri ICEPLANT

With rusty red flowers, this ice plant looks very different from the rest of the clan. It looks good with

Delosperma 'Mesa Verde', another color break in this genus.

 

 

Delosperma 'John Proffit' (Table Mountain tm) TABLE MOUNTAIN ICE PLANT

This iceplant is more compact than D. 'Cooperi' and it begins blooming earlier in the season. How much

moisture iceplants need is a matter of some debate. My opinion is that they bloom better with regular irrigation

in the summer and they survive the winter better if they are not in icy, soggy soil. Other gardeners have had a

different experience.

 

 

Delosperma kelaidis 'Mesa Verde' ICE PLANT

The iridescent salmon colored flowers are held tight against the compact foliage. Very nice habit and very long

blooming. A cross between a yellow and a pink ice plant? My new favorite in this genus. The species name

honors Panayoti Kelaidis, of the Denver Botanic Gardens. He has introduced numerous species of hardy ice

plants (and countless other exciting botanical wonders) in gardens and nurseries in the West. 2" tall.

 

Delosperma 'Lavender Ice' LAVENDER ICE PLANT

Our own foundling, this plant has large lavender flowers with a darker lavender-blue ring at the center. Very

distinctive and a vigorous ground cover. 3" tall, spreading to 18" wide. Zone 4.

 

 

Delosperma nubigenum YELLOW ICE PLANT

Yellow flowers. Very hardy. Blooms in May. Red foliage in fall and winter. Zone 4.

 

 

Dianthus allwoodii x alpinus ALPINE PINK

Silvery-blue foliage; flowers in shades of pink, white and dark rose; some are bicolors, some spotted red on

white petals, and some are a single color; they are all different and all pretty. Cold hardy but not tolerant of

drying winter winds. We usually cover dianthus with evergreen bows in the late fall. Despite their dislike of

winter wind, they are pretty drought tolerant in the summer. 10" tall. Zone 4.

The upturned flowers on this foxglove make it easy to see the pretty freckled throats. Rosy-pink to mauve bells

Large, bell-shaped flowers in shades of pink, cream, and lavender, cover 2' tall stems. Blooms in early

The raspberry-pink flowers appear in June and July over soft and fuzzy foliage. More heat and drought tolerant

Dwarf Bamboo DWARF BAMBOO

We don't know the genus or species, but we know it's hardy in Denver-- it has survived outside in Lakewood,

Colorado for over three years. Spreading but not invasive, this makes a lovely minature bamboo growing near

ponds or for bonsai. 8" tall.

 

 

Echinacea purpurea alba 'White Swan' WHITE CONEFLOWER

A white coneflower with dark orange centers. Like all the coneflowers this one looks best planted only 15" from

it's neighbor. Some of the white coneflowers are fragrant, too. 30" tall. Zone 4.

Deep carmine red petals and dark orange centers make this one of the most outstanding of the purple

coneflowers. 30" tall. Full sun. Zone 4.

Exceptionally large, fragrant, orange flowers surround a deep rust colored cone.

 

 

Eryngium planum SEA HOLLY

A beautiful steely blue flower that is great as an everlasting or in fresh bouquest; blooms in July and August.

Very drought tolerant.

 

 

FERN Adiantum pedatum FERN, FIVE FINGER MAIDENHAIR

A cold hardy North American native and one of the most beautiful of ferns. Long ago, the black stems were

used in basket making. This fern like a rich and moist spot in shade. Zone 3.

 

 

FERN Athyrium nipponicum 'Pictum' JAPANESE PAINTED FERN

Leaves of silver, green and burgundy, this fern is as showy as a flower in a shady garden. Happiest in rich soil

and adequate moisture. Loses all it's leaves in winter, but don't worry, it's very cold hardy and will return in

late April. 18" Zone 4.

 

 

FERN Cheilanthes sinuata WAVY CLOAK FERN

A fern for a sunny, rocky area, with gray green leaves, fuzzy underneath in shades of gold. Young fronds are

silver-white. This fern needs to have its roots in between rocks and its leaves in the sun. Cold hardiness is

undetermined, some growers list it as hardy in Zone 5, others say Zone 8.

 

 

FERN Dryopteris marginalis LEATHERWOOD FERN

One of the best ferns for cut flower bouquets. 3' tall. Has proved to be one of the easier ferns to grow in

Colorado. Zone 5.

 

 

FERN Polystichum munitum WESTERN SWORD FERN

Native from Alaska to California and into the Black Hills of South Dakota, this native Western fern is dramatic in

the garden. The fronds can get to be 3' long. Showy near a pond or stream bed. Needs rich soil and plenty of

water. Evergreen. Zone 5.

 

 

Fragaria frel 'Lipstick' ORNAMENTAL STRAWBERRY

A strawberry plant with deep pink flowers! Small edible berries follow the blooms. Flowers produced all

summer; last year it bloomed from April to October! This plant also looks great in containers.

 

 

Gaillardia aristata BLANKET FLOWER

With its red center and yellow petals, this gaillardia represents summer in the Southwest to all who see it.

Drought tolerant. This native is found up to 9000' elevation in Colorado. Although perennial, it is short-lived,

remaining in the garden by reseeding. Zone 3.

 

 

Gaillardia grandiflora 'Goblin' BLANKET FLOWER

Dwarf form, yellow petals tipped with red. Happy in heavy clay soils. Very long-blooming. 15".

This new seed-grown variety is similar to 'Goblin' but even more compact and longer blooming. It starts

blooming earlier in the season and continues until hard frost in the fall. 12" tall. Drought tolerant.

 

 

Galium odoratum SWEET WOODRUFF

A wonderful ground cover for a shady area; can tolerate moist or dry soils, and blooms profusely in May and

June. One of the few groundcovers that succeeds under evergreen trees. Zone 4.

Delicate white flowers, tinged with pink, cover willowy stems. Long blooming and very heat tolerant. 3' Zone 5.
